Why the Right Glove Is Only Half the Safety Story: Magid GPD700-9, HV200W-10, Bear Spray, and the Stockade Fence Lesson

I'll say it plainly: Most companies don't have a safety-equipment problem. They have an assumptions problem. And nowhere is that clearer than in rush orders. In my role coordinating emergency safety orders, I've watched a lot of well-meaning buyers order the wrong thing because they assumed 'glove' meant 'glove' and 'spray' meant 'spray.' I've made that mistake myself. The industry is evolving, and the fundamentals haven't changed—but the execution has transformed.

Gloves, sprays, fences. In that order—that's how I've come to see the layers of safety. What I mean is that a product ID only makes sense when you know the context it was designed for, and that context changes faster than the catalog does.

The Glove That Changed My Thinking

Let's start with the most common request I see in my rush-order inbox: Magid Glove & Safety GPD700-9. It's a solid, no-nonsense glove for general work. Bear spray is formulated for animals. It's typically designed to create a wide fog cloud, so a charging bear runs through it and gets a face full of the irritant. It is registered as an animal repellent. Pepper spray is designed for self-defense against people. It usually comes as a stream or gel, which is easier to aim and less likely to drift back into your own face.

I assumed this distinction was mostly marketing. Didn't verify. Then a client told me they'd tried to use bear spray on a former employee and got a wind-blown cloud in their own eyes. Not ideal, but workable—for a story. Not for safety.

Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), marketing claims have to be truthful and substantiated. That's why labels matter. If a can says 'bear spray,' it should be intended for bears. If it says 'pepper spray,' it's meant for human threats. Read the label before your crew heads into remote territory.

A Stockade Fence, Tom Sawyer Island, and the Forgotten Layer of Safety

Now the request that taught me the most was not for gloves or spray. It was for a stockade fence. A client needed a temporary perimeter around a worksite and asked for a stockade fence because it was the first style that popped into their head. At first, I thought it was out of our lane. But physical barriers are part of the safety ecosystem. A stockade fence won't stop a vehicle or a determined intruder. It will, however, draw a clean line that tells people: do not cross.

But Won't That Cost More?

Better than waiting for the panic call is a quick audit of what's on your shelf. Is that old can of 'spray' meant for bears or people? Is the fence around your site still upright? Is your glove inventory still aligned with what your crew actually does today?

Here's my position, and I won't soften it: The industry is evolving, and your safety program should evolve with it. That doesn't mean throwing out everything proven. It means questioning the shortcuts you've been assuming. The right glove is important. The right spray matters. The stockade fence has to stay respected. The Tom Sawyer Island fence defacement story might seem like a theme-park curiosity, but it's a reminder that every boundary needs maintenance.

So before you place that next order, ask the annoying questions now. Because the best time to correct a wrong assumption is before the deadline, not after.
