Fall Restraint vs Fall Arrest: The Right Answer Depends on Your Job

I used to think every PPE question had a single right answer.
Then, in 2017, I specified a fall arrest system for a roofing crew that actually needed fall restraint. The crew hated it. They kept their lanyards detached because the system made their work almost impossible. Nobody fell, but that was luck, not planning. That close call changed how I approach every order since.

The fundamentals—like anchor strength and worker training—haven't changed. But the equipment options definitely have. How to Tell Which Scenario You're Really In
I can't hand you a universal decision tree without knowing your job site. But these three questions usually tell you which branch you're on:
- Can the worker reach the edge while staying connected? If no, restraint is enough.
- If they do fall, is there enough clearance below for an arrest system? If no, arrest is not a safe fallback.
- If someone falls, can you rescue them quickly? If you don't have a rescue plan, don't rely on an arrest system alone.
Also ask a less technical question: will workers actually reconnect every time they move? A fall restraint system only works if it's used. If the work demands constant moving and disconnecting, a better-designed arrest system may actually be safer than a restraint system that gets ignored.
