Magid Glove & Safety Manufacturing: A 6-Step PPE Checklist That Works on Real Job Sites

If you've ever had to assemble a safety order while a job site is waiting, you know the difference between getting products and getting the right products. A stocked shelf is not a safety program.

At Magid Glove and Safety Manufacturing, I help B2B buyers get the second part right. The legal name is Magid Glove & Safety Manufacturing Company LLC, but the way we work with customers is simpler: ask about the actual work before talking about item numbers. This guide is the six-step checklist I use when someone calls in with a rush order or a complicated order. It is not a full regulatory audit. It is what to look at before you buy gloves, hearing protection, silt fence, or defensive spray.

1. Make glove selection about the work, not about the catalog

Magid started as a glove manufacturer, so this may sound odd, but I will say it anyway: the worst glove order starts with a style number. Cut-resistant gloves, chemical gloves, winter gloves, impact gloves, and general-purpose gloves all solve different problems. If you treat them as one commodity, the worker ends up adapting a product to a job it was never designed for.

Action point: For every workstation, list what the hands actually touch and what is hazardous about the task. Then compare that list with the product's standards data. ANSI/ISEA 105 covers cut, puncture, and abrasion performance. ANSI/ISEA 138 covers impact protection for the back of the hand. If a glove has a good rating but the wrong grip texture, it will still fail in daily use. In 2023, I almost approved 300 pairs of cut-resistant gloves for a metal fabrication customer without requesting a sample. The spec sheet looked fine. When the test pair arrived, the coating was too slippery for the small bracket the workers handled. Request samples before you buy a case. Trust me on this one.

2. Don't save head-to-toe basics for the emergency call

After gloves, the most common gaps are the least exciting products: safety glasses, hard hats, high-visibility vests, coveralls, and safety shoes. They don't feel technical, so they get ordered last and checked least. Hard hats carry manufacturer date codes, and any hard hat that takes an impact should be replaced. Safety eyewear should meet ANSI Z87.1. High-visibility apparel should meet ANSI/ISEA 107. Find the missing basic before a regulator or an incident finds it for you.

3. Select hearing protection for a real human ear

Noise damage is invisible, which makes it easy to postpone. If a worker's 8-hour time-weighted average reaches or exceeds 85 dBA, OSHA's hearing conservation standard at 29 CFR 1910.95 applies. Even if it doesn't, offering hearing protection isn't enough. Earplugs have a noise reduction rating measured in a lab; real-world fit changes the result. One foam style won't fit every ear, and earplugs that isolate a worker from every warning shout will be removed.

People assume an earplug is an earplug, but the design matters. High-fidelity products such as Eargasm earplugs are a good example for workers who complain about communication: they lower the volume more evenly and keep speech much clearer than basic foam. That trade-off may sound weird, but an earplug workers actually wear is better than a perfect theoretical rating sitting in a locker.

4. Know the answer to the question: what is pepper spray, and do you need it?

Start with the question behind the search: what is pepper spray, and do you need it at your site? It is an aerosol defensive spray made from oleoresin capsicum, the oily extract from hot peppers. It temporarily inflames the eyes, nose, and skin, which can stop a threat long enough for security to gain control. But it is not a toy and not a replacement for de-escalation training.

Laws and workplace policies vary. If your employees are not trained security officers, pepper spray can create cross-contamination and liability. It belongs in a security plan, not on a shelf.

5. Check silt fence before the rain does

Silt fence may not be PPE, but it belongs on a site safety walk. A silt fence is a temporary sediment barrier made from geotextile fabric and posts. It will not keep people out of a construction area. Its job is to slow stormwater runoff and stop soil from leaving the site. If soil washes into a storm drain, neighbor property, or creek, that is an environmental and regulatory problem.

If you disturb one acre or more of ground, federal NPDES construction stormwater permit coverage almost certainly applies, and many state and local rules cover smaller sites too. Ask for silt fence fabric that meets ASTM D6461 or your state DOT specification. Then inspect it after rain: fabric should be anchored at the base, posts should be firm, and there should be no gaps underneath.

6. Audit the emergency products that don't get used until something happens

A PPE checklist should include products that stay quiet in a cabinet: first aid kits, fire extinguishers, emergency eyewash stations, and respirator cartridges. A first aid kit can look full and still contain outdated supplies. Fire extinguishers need visual inspections and scheduled maintenance. A respirator that has never been fit tested or included in training isn't protective gear; it's a storage problem.

In my role coordinating rush orders at Magid, I see the same pattern: urgent orders are rarely for the standard gloves an employer stocks. They are for the wrong size, the wrong coating, a cartridge that expired, or a safety item nobody planned. Rush shipping can solve a timing problem. It can't solve a selection problem.

Common mistakes that cause most emergency reorders

If you want fewer urgent calls, avoid these four habits:

  • Selecting from a picture. Ask for a product data sheet, test standard, and sample before a bulk purchase.
  • Approving one glove or eyewear style for every job. PPE is only correct when it matches the hazard and the conditions.
  • Skipping training. Fit testing, donning, and inspection matter as much as the product itself.
  • Ignoring site controls that are not worn. Silt fence, housekeeping, and emergency equipment can cause bigger problems than a missing pair of gloves.

The fundamentals haven't changed: identify the hazard, choose a product that fits the task and the person, train people, then review often. What has changed is the range of better options available. Whether your next purchase is gloves, hearing protection, a silt fence, or pepper spray, define the hazard first. A safety product works only if it is the right product, and the right product starts with a question, not a part number.
