Why Does My Fire Alarm Keep Beeping? A PPE Buyer's Checklist for Magid Glove, Safety Goggles, and Tinted Safety Glasses

Four years ago, I took over purchasing for a 300-person manufacturing facility. I'm an office administrator, not a safety engineer. Look for the ANSI Z87.1 marking on the frame or lens. A plus sign means high impact. No marking? Don't assume it's safety rated.

I learned this during our 2024 vendor consolidation project. I ordered a 50-pack of tinted safety glasses at a good price. They didn't have the plus sign. The safety manager rejected the whole box before it hit the floor. That was about $600 in wasted spend and a week of lead time.

There's also a human factor. The most protective piece of eye gear does no good if people leave it on the bench. The conventional wisdom is to always pick the highest protection level. My experience is that the gear people will actually wear is usually the better purchase.

Before I approve a product, I look for the applicable standard—ANSI, NFPA, or OSHA references—plus the material or coating and the exact measurements. For gloves, that means cut level and grip type. For safety goggles, that means anti-fog coating and head strap. For any eyewear, that means the ANSI mark.

After five years of managing purchasing, I've learned that the best system is simple. Keep a minimum-stock list in the storage closet. When gloves hit 20 pairs, the floor supervisor sends me a message. When safety goggles hit 10, the maintenance lead adds it to the weekly email. When a fire alarm starts chirping, I know to check the unit.

I used a spreadsheet at first. That worked fine. We later moved to a shared doc with product codes, minimum quantities, and preferred models. It cut our ordering time from about four hours to less than one hour.
